Those of you who were at the Annual Meeting in Orlando know that the
NEEDHA committee on ABET Criteria 2000 has been hard at work.  The
committee has now been expanded and is in a position to make a
positive contribution to the interpretation of these criteria as they
apply to electrical and computer engineering programs.  The committee
is meeting April 13 (only a few days from now).  This seems to be a
critical time for influencing the process.  The committee has been in
contact with ABET people to insure that its recommendations will be
viewed constructively when received.

At Orlando it was agreed that those schools that have developed
material related to ABET Criteria 2000 should be encouraged to
share their material with other NEEDHA members.  We plan to use the
NEEDHA Web site to accomplish this sharing.

Two sorts of material were considered worth sharing.  One is the
program objectives, both for the EE/CpE programs and for other
engineering programs.  The other is any surveys that have been used
to gather data about the effectiveness of programs, for example from
alumni/ae or from employers; again this can be for the EE/CpE programs
or for other engineering programs.  (We just want the survey instruments,
not the results of the surveys.)

Now is the time to act.  Please send me any material you think is
relevant in the next few days.  Anything that I get will be made
available to the committee for their upcoming meeting.  It will also
be put on the NEEDHA Web site for the benefit of other members.

Specifically, let me ask

(1) those universities that have already undergone an accreditation
    visit under Criteria 2000,
(2) those universities that are scheduled for such a visit in 1997, and
(3) those universities that are thinking ahead and are already doing
    surveys or have objectives formulated,

to send me whatever they are willing to share with the rest of the
NEEDHA membership via the NEEDHA Web site.  I will see that it gets
mounted promptly.  If you are willing to have your material considered
by the committee but are not willing to have it on the Web site,
please send it directly to John Orr <orr@ece.wpi.edu>.
