NEEDHA Board Establishes New Committee on Accreditation Issues

Dear NEEDHA member,

At the NEEDHA Board meeting in August, it was decided to expand the
NEEDHA activities related to ABET Engineering Criteria 2000 (and also
other accreditation issues).  As you probably know, we have had an ad
hoc committee in existence for about a year, and there was a report at
the meeting last March in Orlando, and some resource material has been
placed on the NEEDHA Web site.

The Board voted to replace the current ad hoc committee with a permanent
standing committee on accreditation.  The charge to this committee is
two-fold.  First, it is to provide material to assist NEEDHA members in
accreditation matters, particularly with respect to the major changes
inherent in ABET Engineering Criteria 2000.  Second, it is to provide
advice to IEEE and ABET about effective implementation of accreditation
procdures, particularly with respect to the major changes inherent in
ABET Engineering Criteria 2000.

In order to facilitate communication with IEEE and ABET, the Board felt
it desirable to have the committee led by someone already active in IEEE
accreditation affairs.  Sherra Kerns, senior past President of NEEDHA,
is a member of the IEEE Committee on Educational Accreditation Activities.
She has agreed to be the Chair of our new NEEDHA committee.  Other members 
of this committee will be announced at a later time.

The previous ad hoc committee has prepared two draft reports, which will
be revised and issued by the new committee.  One of these is aimed at
NEEDHA members, and the other at IEEE and ABET.  You should expect to hear
about these reports within a few weeks.

Let me urge you to communicate with any member of the new committee about
any aspects of accreditation, particularly ABET Engineering Criteria 2000.
The committee exists to serve the NEEDHA membership and the accrediation
community.
