Question #2: What do you have when you return to a non-administrative position?

Answer: None of the above

 

My First Experience -- Returning to the Faculty After Being an Associate Dean

  1. Budget -- Absolutely None
  2. Office -- Shared Office Space in a Converted Store Room
  3. Secretarial Support -- From Personal Secretary to an Overloaded, Shared, Departmental Secretary
  4. Teaching Assignments -- Reasonable
  5. Research Support -- Had to Start Over
  6. Ability to Effect Decision-Making -- Absolutely None

 

My Second Experience -- Returning to the Faculty After Being a Department Chair

  1. Budget -- Laid Aside Funds with Personal Control (Not Controlled by New Chair)
  2. Office -- Worked with Dean to Develop Plan for "Appropriate" Office Space
  3. Administrative Supplement -- Negotiated Continuation of Supplement
  4. Secretarial Support -- Constructed Assignments to Ensure Adequate Support
  5. Teaching Assignments -- Negotiated Written Agreement on Teaching Assignment
  6. Research -- Began Structuring Research Team and Obtaining Contracts Before Terminating as Chair
  7. Ability to Effect Decision-Making -- Developed Administration Positions to Allow Transitioning in Stages
  8. Acquisition of New Assignments -- Each One Negotiated (in Writing) with Definite, Specific Accrued Benefits
