Sung-Mo (Steve) Kang (S'73-M'75-SM'80-F'90) received B.S. (1970), M.S.(1972), Ph.D. (1975) degrees in electrical engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of California at Berkeley. Until 1985 he was with AT&T Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, N.J. and also served as a faculty member of Rutgers University. From 1982 to 1985, he was Supervisor of High-End CMOS VLSI Microprocessor Design. While with AT&T Bell Laboratories, he has worked on ISDN services network planning, design and test of WE32000-series CMOS VLSI microprocessor chips, clock chips, microbus controller and interface chips. He also led a task force on manufacturing in Western Electric plant in Allentown, PA for six months.
In 1985, he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he is Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Research Professor of Coordinated Science Laboratory, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. He has served as Founding Director of Center for ASIC Research and Development (CARD) and as Associate Director of Research in the NSF Engineering Research Center for Compound Semiconductor Microelectronics. He has been a consultant for microelectronics industry and delivered lectures, plenary and keynote talks at international conferences on VLSI design, optoelectronics and CAD.
He has served professional fields in many capacities as a member of IEEE Technical Activities Board Advisory Committee (TABAC), Secretary and Treasurer, Administrative Vice President, 1991 President of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, and University Advisory Board of U.S. Semiconductor Research Corporation. He is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS and has received the KBS Award- Science and Technology (1997), IEEE Graduate Teaching Technical Field Award (1996), IEEE CAS Society Technical Achievement Award (1997), Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for Senior US Scientists (1996), University of Illinois Senior University Scholar Award (1995), IEEE CAS Meritorious Service Award (1994), IEEE Darlington Prize Paper Award (1993), SRC Inventor Recognition Award (1993, 1996), Best Paper Award from International Conference on Computer Design (1987), IEEE Computer Society Meritorious Service Award (1990), Myril B. Reed Best Paper Award from Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (1979), and several other awards from IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He was elected as a foreign member to the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.
His current research interests include VLSI design methodologies, optimization techniques for performance, reliability and manufacturability of mixed analog-digital circuits, modeling and simulation of semiconductor devices and circuits, and optoelectronic circuits and systems, fully optical networks and their application to high-performance computing and communications.
He holds six patents, has published over 250 papers in various international journals and conferences, and has co-authored six books, Design Automation for Timing-Driven Layout Synthesis (1993), Hot-Carrier Reliability of MOS VLSI Circuits (1993), Physical Design for Multichip Modules (1994), Modeling of Electrical Overstress (1994) from Kluwer Academic Publishers, CMOS Digital Integrated Circuits and Systems: Design and Analysis (1995, 1999) from McGraw-Hill, and Computer-Aided Design of Optoelectronic Circuits and Systems (1996) from Prentice Hall. Dr. Kang is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems. He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Technology, Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in Midwest, American Men and Women of Science, and is a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He has been also listed in the incomplete list of excellent teachers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
