President John Orr welcomed everyone to the ECEDHA (see "NEEDHA becomes ECEDHA") 17th Annual Meeting in San Diego on March 15 - 20, 2001. The focus of the meeting was on issues related to the future of electrical and computer engineering, the role of bioengineering, the life sciences, information systems, and issues related to wireless and broadband communication systems. The meeting started with an excellent presentation on the future of electrical and computer engineering by James Plummer, dean of the College of Engineering at Stanford University. This was followed by sessions on the role of bioengineering, life sciences, and information systems in ECE's future. Issues related to wireless and broadband communications were covered on the last day with breakout sessions on diversity, distance education, and ABET issues. This annual meeting attracted the largest number of registered members.

The ECEDHA Outstanding Leadership and Service Award was presented to Edward Ernst, now retired as Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Ernst spent his lifetime in engineering education investigating the nature, scope and the direction of change that seems to be evolving in engineering education.
Dr. Ernst received his education in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois and served at that university as faculty, associate department head, and acting head of electrical and computer engineering until retirement in 1989. From 1987 to 1990, he served as the program director for undergraduate education at NSF and was involved in the evaluation and funding of the educational coalitions among major and small institutions to enhance engineering education. He was instrumental in establishing the initial link between NEEDHA and IEC and served as IEC representative on the NEEDHA board until 1999.

The ECEDHA Innovative Program Award was presented to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's undergraduate program in electrical engineering (EE), computer, and systems engineering (CSE) for the broad implementation of studio courses.
Since the mid 1990s, Rensselaer's electrical, computer, and systems engineering department has completely revised most of its core undergraduate courses into the studio format and has developed a large body of interactive multimedia materials that help make studio delivery of courses effective. This new pedagogy has been fully integrated into the core of both the EE and CSE curricula. New studio classrooms have been constructed in which 10 core courses are offered with all studio activities including lectures, paper and pencil problem solving, simulations, and experiments. These courses run the gamut from electrical circuits to field and waves to computer components and operations. The scope of this development process has engaged over two-thirds of ECSE faculty and all departmental support staff. Faculty who have previously been only adequate in the classroom have developed into exceptional teachers. Student evaluations of instructors and courses have risen significantly.

ECEDHA presents two awards: The Outstanding Leadership and Service Award to current or former ECEDHA members who have provided outstanding leadership and exceptional service to the organization, and the Innovative Program Award to a department or individual(s) who has developed and implemented a particularly innovative program in EE/ECE education.
Please send nominations to Satinderpaul Singh Devgan, chair of the Awards Committee or to Kathy Ricker at IEC. To accommodate the selection process for the annual meeting, nominations should be received by January 15, 2002 and should be accompanied by a brief supporting statement and the sponsor's contact information. More information on ECEDHA Awards is on the ECEDHA Web site.
The specific origins of our name, the "National Electrical Engineering Department Heads' Association," are lost in the mists of time, but it has served us very well. "NEEDHA" was easily pronounceable, and we ignored that fact that two of its component words did not represent us accurately: Our membership (associate members, actually) extends well beyond the national borders of the United States, particularly to Canada and Mexico. Further, the growth in the importance and ubiquity of computers and computation has been recognized broadly in department and program names, but was missing from our name. More specifically, there were some departments and programs of computer engineering whose faculty were not aware that NEEDHA served their interests. The NEEDHA Board of Directors concluded that a name change was in order and the name "Computer and Electrical Engineering Department Heads' Association" (CEEHDA) was proposed.
The motion for a name change was made at the annual meeting, and a lively discussion ensued. The proposed name was amended to "Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads' Association," and the motion to move forward with the constitutional amendment passed overwhelmingly at the annual meeting. The paper ballot on the amendment was also overwhelming in its support for the new name. While the elimination of "national" in our name does not imply any plans to revise our membership qualifications, we hope that our new name will be welcoming to associate membership and participation from around the world, as well as to heads from the computer engineering side of our profession. Now, just practice saying "ECEDHA" (e-sea-dah) until it rolls easily off the tongue! (John A. Orr).

After enjoying a continental breakfast at the Hutchinson Island Marriott, guests will depart for a cruise of the Intercoastal Waterway, featuring the homes of many celebrities and some beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. The cruise will be followed by a luncheon in one of the area's lovely oceanside restaurants, and guests will have ample opportunity to roam unique shops before returning to the hotel for the evening's activities.
The Turtle Bay Hilton in Oahu, Hawaii will be the site for ECEDHA's 19th Annual Meeting, March 14 - 18, 2003. This hotel was the site of the 1998 Annual Meeting and since that time has undergone an extensive renovation. Guest rooms and the hotel's facade, as well as meeting and banquet rooms, all have a new look. Plan on joining your colleagues in 2003 at one of Oahu's most beautiful locations.
The electrical and computer engineering profession continues to be strong and vibrant and will continue to be a major player in future technological advances. In spite of the soft economy, I feel that our graduates will continue to be strongly sought after. However, because of world conditions, we as leaders of our respective institutions will need to work even harder to determine what is required of our programs and graduates to make the world a better place in which to live.

I feel that ECEDHA has played a major role over the years in helping us perform this function. Although ECEDHA is a relatively small organization, with about 275 members, it is very focused and has responded quickly to its members' needs. This responsiveness is due in no small part to your high level of participation in our efforts and meetings. The participation that we have had in the EC2000 development and deployment has been enormous and very beneficial to the profession. We have had many sessions at our annual meetings on EC2000, and have created a workshop that helps our programs nearing evaluation.
We have responded to the change in our profession by changing our name from NEEDHA to ECEDHA. Since the computer science and computer engineering professions are seeing more overlap, we have started a dialog with the Computing Research Association (CRA) which primarily represents the research interests of the computing profession. However, it has a great interest in the education aspects of the discipline and represents a large portion of the computer science chairs and heads.
In August, the ECEDHA Board of Directors met to discuss the 2002 Annual Meeting program and other issues. I would like to share some of these discussions with you. First, the board felt that we had not directly focused on our actual product, the student, for some time at our meetings. Therefore, the theme of the 2002 Meeting will be "Preparing the Professional of the Future." We felt that the workshop for EE/CpE programs to be visited in the current year should be continued. In addition, the IEEE ABET Evaluator's Workshop will be held on Sunday this year. Finally, there is some interest in having ECEDHA become "involved" in government activities. Therefore, I will be forming a government research committee that will determine what we should be doing in this arena.
In closing, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you who have supported my activities with ECEDHA. I look forward to your continued support while I serve as your president. ECEDHA continues to be a great experience for me and a real asset as a department chair. I also need to acknowledge the tremendous support of IEC and its great people. I look forward to seeing you in Hutchinson Island in March!

Traditionally, ECEDHA members attending ASEE and FIE annual meetings get together for dinner at a convenient location. Over 100 ECEDHA members were treated to an excellent dinner and authentic American Indian dances at an American Indian reservation as guests of Agilent Corporation. We sincerely thank Agilent Corporation and its representatives for organizing this event and for their outstanding hospitality. The ECEDHA dinner at the Frontiers in Education (FIE) 2001 was organized by Dave Soldan on behalf of Stephen Goodnick and was a nice evening of conversation, good friends, and good food. Approximately 16 members and spouses attended the dinner.
The FIE 2001 conference was held at the Nugget Hotel in Reno, Nevada, October 10 - 13, 2001. The annual conference started with workshops on Wednesday, October 10, followed by technical paper sessions on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 11 - 13). More than 400 people attended the conferences, including ECEDHA members and faculty members. Our hearty congratulation to Dave Soldan, who received two awards at the Saturday Banquet.
